The Parliament Diary

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s approach to the Rivers State political crisis can indeed be seen as that of a “patient dog,” navigating the conflict with calculated restraint rather than aggressive confrontation. This strategy seems to aim at outlasting his opponents while consolidating power subtly.

  1. Strategic Silence and Restraint: Fubara has largely avoided public outbursts or direct confrontations with the lawmakers loyal to Wike. Instead, he’s allowed the political and legal processes to unfold, carefully picking his battles. This patience could be a calculated move to avoid escalating tensions, allowing his adversaries to make hasty decisions that could backfire.
  2. Leveraging Institutional Power:
By aligning with judicial processes and securing court orders to limit the actions of the pro-Wike lawmakers, Fubara has subtly used the legal system to shield himself while presenting the image of a law-abiding leader. This adds legitimacy to his actions and denies his opponents easy political victories.
  3. Building Grassroots Support:
Fubara seems to be playing the long game by strengthening ties with grassroots supporters and local political structures. Over time, this could erode the influence of the pro-Wike lawmakers and position him as the people’s champion.
  4. Waiting for Opponents to Overreach:
The defections and impeachment threats against Fubara might appear bold, but they carry risks for the pro-Wike faction. If they push too hard or act unlawfully, Fubara could emerge as the underdog, gaining public sympathy and political leverage.
  5. Political Survival:
In Nigerian politics, patience often wins the game. Governors who endure early political storms tend to grow stronger as their tenure progresses. Fubara may be biding his time, waiting for the opposition’s momentum to wane before asserting himself decisively.

In essence, Fubara’s patience might not be weakness but rather a well-calculated strategy to outmaneuver his opponents, secure his position, and gradually build a legacy of resilience. Whether this will pay off or backfire depends on how long the political storm lasts and whether his allies remain steadfast. As to whether his patience will eventually pay off, or leave him vulnerable to further attacks, we all watch as events unfold.
