Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has reaffirmed his commitment to humility, respect for people, and reliance on God, despite holding the highest office in the state. Speaking at a surprise 50th birthday celebration orchestrated by his wife, Lady Valerie Fubara, and key stakeholders of Rivers State at the Governor’s Lodge in Port Harcourt, the governor declared that power is transient and will never alter his principles.
The emotional celebration, held at dawn on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, caught the unsuspecting governor off guard. Known for his modest approach to birthdays, Governor Fubara was moved to tears as his wife, alongside notable dignitaries, surprised him with a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
Among those present were former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus; Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu; Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Victor Oko Jumbo; former Governor Sir Celestine Omehia; Dr. Abiye Sekibo; Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo; and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Rt. Hon. (High Chief) Ehie Edison, among others.
Expressing his gratitude, Governor Fubara said, “This morning, I feel so humbled. I have been swept off my feet. Sincerely, all my life, I have never subscribed to celebrating birthdays, particularly in this way. What has been done this morning, in conjunction with my wife, shows so much love and appreciation that, honestly, I do not know how to pay back.”
Reflecting on his journey to the golden age, he vowed to remain true to his values, emphasizing that humility and reverence for God will continue to guide his governance.
“I remain the Fubara you know. With your support, the Rivers State we all desire will definitely be attained. Even if not achieved immediately, we shall put the foundations in place to channel us toward that accomplishment. I assure you, I will not act in any manner that brings disrepute to myself or the Rivers people who have sacrificed so much for this government.”
The governor described his 50th birthday as a moment of joy and self-reflection. “I am celebrating my golden jubilee. It means I have joined the league of old men from today. I thank everyone on behalf of my wife and my children, who are with us in spirit. I cannot repay your kindness, but I pray that Almighty God rewards you all for your sacrifices.”
In his goodwill message, Prince Uche Secondus lauded Governor Fubara’s leadership and humility, describing him as God’s ordained leader for Rivers State. “This gathering is to honor you and join hands with the Archbishop of Ikwerre Diocese, Bishop Blessing Enyindah, as he prays for your continued success. It is a moment for us, as true representatives of Rivers State, to celebrate your golden age and your simplicity in governance.”
Secondus also noted the governor’s resilience in overcoming early challenges in office, stating, “You were troubled after you assumed office, but in those trying times, Rivers people discovered the strength of your character. Your humility, God-fearing nature, and dedication have earned admiration and love across all sections of the state and beyond.”
Rt. Hon. (High Chief) Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff, highlighted the governor’s admirable qualities, including patience, humility, thoroughness, and a God-fearing disposition. “On this golden jubilee, we congratulate you. Thank you for your love, support, and selfless service to Rivers State. This celebration is a reflection of the respect and admiration you have earned from all of us.”
The celebration took a lively turn as Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu led members of the State Executive Council in presenting gifts to the governor.
