On April 10, 2025, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, made a pivotal move in advancing the state’s industrial ambitions by signing into law the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024. This groundbreaking legislation sets the stage for Delta to become a hub for industrial growth, attracting both domestic and international investments.
As Executive Assistant on Community Development, I take immense pride in the Governor’s visionary leadership and the significant strides he is making to transform Delta into an industrial powerhouse. This new law is a crucial part of the Governor’s MORE Agenda, which seeks to build a stronger, more resilient Delta by addressing the most pressing challenges facing our state.
For too long, Deltans have struggled with power shortages and unreliable electricity, which have hindered business growth and stunted economic progress. However, with the passage of the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Law, the state is now poised to unlock a wealth of opportunities in the energy sector. This law is not merely about providing electricity; it is about creating an enabling environment for investment, growth, and prosperity.
Governor Oborevwori’s emphasis on power as the backbone of industrial and economic development is not just a statement; it’s a strategic understanding of what drives progress. As he rightly pointed out, “You can’t do any investment without power.” Reliable electricity is essential for every business, community, and initiative that contributes to the state’s economy.
The new law allows Delta to generate, transmit, and distribute its electricity independently. This marks a monumental step towards energy autonomy. In practice, this means the state can now attract investors looking to capitalize on power generation, transmission, and distribution. Ultimately, this will drive Delta’s industrialization, create jobs, stimulate local economies, and improve the quality of life for all Deltans.
From the oil and gas sectors in Warri, Kwale and Sapele
to the rapidly developing Asaba, from the growing industries in Ughelli to the agricultural hubs scattered around the state the benefits of this law will be felt across Delta. The bill provides a clear legal framework to support the development of renewable energy initiatives and encourages private sector investment. It is not just about power; it is about empowering communities and laying the foundation for long-term economic diversification.
The Delta State Electricity Power Sector Law opens a new frontier for business opportunities in the state. It will attract energy developers, private sector players, and Deltans in the diaspora to invest their expertise and resources into the state’s growing energy sector. The time is now for these stakeholders to seize the opportunities that this law will create.
While the signing of this bill is an exciting milestone, it is crucial to understand that the true success of this initiative will depend on its effective implementation. Achieving the goals set out in this law will require collaboration among local governments, communities, energy experts, and development partners. Only through collective effort can we ensure that this reform leads to tangible improvements in power supply and economic development.
Conclusion: Powering the Future of Delta
The signing of the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the state’s growth story. Under the Governor’s leadership, Delta is not just building infrastructure; we are powering dreams, fostering industrial growth, and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
I invite all Deltans, investors, and energy sector professionals to join us on this exciting journey. Together, we will build a Delta that is not only energy-efficient but also a beacon of progress and prosperity in the Niger Delta.
