The Parliament Diary

Comrade Enudi Marcus, from Ukwuani LGA in Delta State, is a passionate advocate for good governance, accountability, and transparency, as well as a champion for the equal rights of all ethnic nationalities in Delta State and Nigeria. In this interview, he bares his mind on the surprise mass defection of Delta State PDP leaders and members to APC.
Excerpts:

Question: What’s your opinion on the Mass Defection of Delta State PDP Leaders and Members to APC?
Frankly, I never imagined that such a sweeping political shift would occur in Delta State, yet here it is before our eyes. I had sensed something was brewing when I noticed subtle changes in the rhetoric of both the former and current governors. I raised concerns early on, but many dismissed them. Now, it’s clear that many party leaders were left out of the loop during these developments-some appeared genuinely surprised and confused, learning of the defection only at the last moment. Unfortunately, there was little they could do to change the outcome.
While I welcome these new members to the APC, my hope is that they avoid repeating the mistakes that drove earlier defectors away. This is not just about party leadership; it’s about ensuring fairness and equitable distribution of the dividends of democracy across all senatorial districts, and treating everyone with respect and dignity.
Personally, I left the PDP years ago because of the lack of internal democracy and the arrogance of some members who acted above reproach. As a founding member of the PDP in my ward and LGA, I watched as newcomers disregarded the input of those who built the party. Our complaints and appeals went unheard, leaving us no choice but to move on. I joined the APC and worked with others to rebuild it at the grassroots. Now, the APC is seen as the party to beat, and perhaps this move will prompt some to reflect on past mistakes and choose a better path forward.

Question: Do You See a Bright Future for this alliance?
As a realist, my honest answer is no. Many of those celebrating together today are driven by personal ambitions rather than collective progress. Political alliances like this often come with hidden agendas, and it won’t be long before internal conflicts, backstabbing, and betrayals surface. Only a small fraction are genuinely committed to positive change, while the majority seem to be following a script that serves their interests, not those of the people.
Significant sums have likely exchanged hands behind the scenes, and some respected leaders are already behaving out of character. While I am not wishing for chaos, I foresee turbulent times ahead. However, the PDP is not finished in Delta State; many steadfast members remain and will work to revive the party. I also predict that some of today’s defectors will eventually return to the PDP, and some dissatisfied APC members may join them. The motives behind these defections are what concern me most-are they joining to build or to destroy? The current atmosphere is filled with insincerity, and only time will reveal the true intentions behind this political realignment.

Question: What’s your advice to All Parties Involved?
My advice is simple: stop the pretence. There are a few, like the Senator representing Delta North, who speak the truth fearlessly-an uncommon trait in our political climate. I urge everyone, especially those with selfish motives, to reconsider their actions and work together for the betterment of Delta State. Only through sincerity and collective effort can we achieve real progress.
