The Executive Chairman of Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. (Chief) Goddey Obi Nzete, today celebrated this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day in style at the council premises.

In his address, the council chairman stated:

“With gratitude to God Almighty, I welcome you all to this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration. The celebration of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day is a yearly event held in memory and recognition of our great fallen heroes who laid down their lives for our nation. In keeping with this tradition, we are gathered here today.

“To refresh our memories, the Armed Forces Day was formerly observed on the 11th of November each year to coincide with Remembrance Day for the Second World War, which ended in 1945 across the British Commonwealth of Nations.

“However, in Nigeria, the date was changed by our former leaders to the 15th of January each year to commemorate 1966, when the first gun was fired, heralding the events that metamorphosed into the Nigerian Civil War.

“You may recall that, in the pursuit of protecting the territorial integrity and unity of our dear nation, as well as enthroning and sustaining democratic governance, some of these heroes lost their lives. Others were incapacitated, while many now live in pitiable conditions of despair and abject poverty due to permanent disabilities. It is evident that these soldiers meritoriously served this country to the best of their ability and were later discharged to their native homes.

“It is also worthy of note that many of these heroes and their descendants are unemployed or not gainfully employed. Hence, concerted and determined efforts are required to aid in resettling these gallant patriots, whose productive capacities have been shattered in their fight to ensure unity and restore peace for mankind.

“As we move forward, we must continue to prioritize the well-being and support of our service members and their families. We must ensure that they receive the care, resources, and recognition they deserve. Additionally, we must work toward a future where conflicts are resolved through diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation rather than violence and bloodshed.

“Let us take a moment to remember the words of a great leader who once said, ‘The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.’ Today, we rise to honor the memories of our fallen heroes, support our service members and their families, and strive for a brighter, more peaceful future for all. We will remember them, honor them, and continue to work toward a world where their sacrifices are never forgotten.”

In conclusion, the chairman and his team satisfactorily observed all ceremonies related to the celebration. He also promised to continue putting smiles on the faces of retired military officers and the families of fallen service members.
