The political terrain of Rivers State over the past 13 years has been anything but tranquil. It has been a landscape defined by intense rivalries, dramatic power struggles, and the recurring influence of political godfatherism. From the era of former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, through the dominant reign of Nyesom Wike, and now to the administration of the incumbent governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers State politics has remained a theatre of constant tension and recalibration. Navigating this terrain has proven to be a difficult journey for both leaders and the governed.

Governor Fubara’s emergence into office was, by all reasonable accounts, significantly influenced by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike (now a minister of the Federal Republic). Given this background, many observers like myself anticipated an administration tightly controlled by its political benefactor, with little room for independent authority. This expectation seemed validated when Wike openly deployed the machinery of political godfatherism, culminating in the controversial suspension of Governor Fubara few months ago (an act that underscored the depth of the power struggle within the state).

Although the precise details of the disagreement between both men were never fully articulated to the general public, but it was widely perceived that Governor Fubara sought to assert his autonomy and govern Rivers State without excessive interference from his political “father.” This quest for independence, many believe, was the fundamental trigger behind the governor’s suspension.

Following his reinstatement, the public witnessed a series of reconciliatory gestures: joint appearances at political events, cordial exchanges, and public displays of unity between* Fubara and Wike.* To many, this signaled a return to political harmony. However, beneath this facade of reconciliation lay a more complex reality. Governor Fubara, by all indications, understood that remaining within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under Wike’s towering influence would continue to constrain his authority and undermine his capacity to make decisive governance choices. Any renewed defiance could once again invite federal pressure and destabilizing interventions.

Against this backdrop, Governor Fubara’s decision to defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) stands out as both strategic and visionary. By aligning himself openly with the ruling party and publicly endorsing the continuity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor effectively neutralized the political leverage that had previously been wielded against him. This move was not impulsive; it was a carefully calculated act of political self-preservation and institutional strengthening.

Personally, I find it deeply unsettling that governors and other esteemed political figures are defecting en masse to align themselves with the APC. But, Governor Fubara’s case is exceptional. His defection represents liberation from suffocating political control and the reclaiming of executive independence. Now my question is: What practical influence can Wike realistically exert over a sitting APC governor in Rivers State, now firmly aligned with the presidency?

In one decisive stroke, Governor Fubara has repositioned himself as the undisputed political authority in the state. The balance of power has shifted, and the former dynamics of dominance and subordination have been fundamentally altered. Even his symbolic gestures such as the now-popular song (if you won support Tinubu no follow Kona Kona) advocating open and unwavering support for President Tinubu serve as a subtle yet unmistakable message: political loyalty should be clear, bold, and uncompromised.

Today, Governor Fubara governs with renewed confidence, enjoying the breathing space necessary to execute his vision without intimidation, coercion, or external manipulation. While some may argue that political courtesy demanded prior consultation with his former benefactor, such considerations are ultimately secondary. What matters most is that Governor Fubara now stands on equal footing with the federal power structure, effectively ending any undue influence previously exercised over him.

Above all, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection must be acknowledged for what it truly is: a masterstroke of political calculation, courage, and foresight. It was timely, strategic, and profoundly consequential. Kudos to the governor and to those who offered him the counsel to take this bold and transformative step. History is likely to remember this moment as a defining turning point in the politics of Rivers State.
