A chaotic scene erupted at the Edo State Election Tribunal sitting today, Monday, as officials from the Department of State Services (DSS) and journalists clashed, leading to heightened tensions and interruptions in the courtroom proceedings.
The tribunal, tasked with addressing disputes stemming from the recent gubernatorial elections in Edo State, was already under intense scrutiny as stakeholders and the public awaited crucial verdicts. However, the situation escalated when DSS operatives attempted to enforce strict measures on media personnel trying to cover the proceedings.
Eyewitnesses reported that the clash began when some overzealous DSS officials, attempted to barred certain journalists from entering the courtroom, citing security protocols. This triggered a heated confrontation, with journalists resisting the violation of their rights to report on public proceedings. The scene intensified as the press pushed back, demanding access to inform the public on the tribunal’s developments.
Tensions flared as both sides grappled for control, resulting in shoving matches and loud exchanges, that resulted in one of the journalist being manhandled. The situation was later brought under control following interventions from court officials, who sought to mediate the dispute between the DSS and the journalists.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, a veteran journalist lamented the growing hostility towards the press by members of the DSS stressing that the journalists were merely carrying out their duties. “We are here to uphold the public’s right to know. It’s essential that we have access to these proceedings, especially when the integrity of our electoral process is at stake,” he stated.
The clash has raised alarm among civil society organizations and media practitioners, describing the incident, as a troubling sign against press freedoms, especially in politically sensitive situations.
They therefore called on the Director- General, DSS, and Edo State Director of DSS, to caution their men against future occurrence, stressing that journalists have the right to access the tribunal, and keep the public informed of events at the tribunal.
As the tribunal continues its work, observers and citizens alike are keeping a close watch on developments, hoping for a resolution that upholds transparency and respects the media’s critical role in democracy. The clash at the tribunal not only highlights the tensions surrounding the electoral process but also spotlights the ongoing struggle for press freedom in Nigeria.
Today’s incidence at the tribunal underscores the precarious balance between security measures and the essential function of journalism in a democratic society, leaving many to question the future of media access in politically sensitive situations.
