Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has call for nationwide demonstrations over issues surrounding the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, urging young Nigerians to strengthen their demand for political reform and accountability.

He made the call during a peaceful protest at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday. Sowore commended supporters for their commitment but emphasized that the movement must expand significantly to achieve meaningful results.

He maintained that genuine reform cannot be secured through a single tactic, calling instead for broader civic engagement and coordinated grassroots efforts.

Sowore encouraged citizens to challenge the political system through multiple channels, including active participation in elections and sustained public advocacy.

Ramadan Begins Today Says Sultan

The holy month of Ramadan began in Nigeria on Wednesday 18 February 2026, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III, has announced.

The Sultan, who is also president of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), made the announcement in a broadcast on Tuesday night following the sighting of the new crescent moon in several parts of the country, the National Moonsighting Committee said.

“The Sultan felicitates with the entire Muslim community on the auspicious occasion of the forthcoming 1447AH Ramadan fast,” the statement added. He prayed that Allah would spare the lives of every Muslim so they may participate in the fast and derive its full benefits.

The Ramadan crescent was earlier sighted in Saudi Arabia and other countries.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection and charity. Observing Muslims fast from just before the dawn prayer (Fajr) until the sunset prayer (Maghrib). The fast involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking and sexual relations to cultivate greater taqwa, or consciousness of Allah.

As the Qur’an states: “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn piety and righteousness” (Qur’an 2:183).

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, alongside the declaration of faith, the five daily prayers, charity (zakah) and, for those who are physically and financially able, the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new crescent.
