The Parliament Diary

From Moshood Karim

In just under two years since his election to the 10th Nigerian Senate, Senator Neda Imasuen has swiftly carved a niche for himself as one of the most dynamic and people-oriented lawmakers representing Edo South. Renowned for his philanthropic spirit and tireless service to his constituents, Imasuen is not only redefining what it means to represent a people—he is setting a benchmark for impactful, grassroots-driven governance.

From the outset, Senator Imasuen made it abundantly clear that his tenure would not be characterised by empty rhetoric or media fanfare. True to his word, he has brought the dividends of democracy directly to the people—through education, empowerment, and active legislative engagement. A firm believer in education as the bedrock of any progressive society, he has been instrumental in driving initiatives that directly uplift the educational landscape in Edo South.

Among his standout legislative pursuits is a bold bill seeking to establish a Federal College of Education in Abudu, Edo State. The proposal, aimed at addressing the chronic shortage of qualified teachers in the constituency, signals the Senator’s foresight and his dedication to creating long-term solutions rather than quick fixes. He has also championed an amendment to the Federal Medical Centres Act, geared towards enhancing the operational efficiency of healthcare facilities across Nigeria.

Senator Imasuen’s passion for education goes beyond legislative halls. His scholarship scheme has provided financial support to over 420 students in higher institutions, offering them not just funding but hope for a brighter future. At the secondary school level, full scholarships have been awarded, alongside assistance with JAMB registration—significantly reducing the financial burden on families and ensuring no child is left behind due to economic constraints.

But his efforts do not stop there. Recognising the challenges faced by many rural dwellers and young people in Edo South, the Senator has launched an extensive series of training and empowerment programmes. These initiatives have reached hundreds of youths, women, and farmers—equipping them with vital skills, start-up tools, and resources to lead sustainable livelihoods. Over 500 farmers have directly benefited, receiving essential farm implements, improved seedlings, and modern tools to boost productivity and income.

These life-changing programmes reflect a deeper philosophy that guides Senator Imasuen’s politics—leadership that listens, understands, and responds. A native son of the soil, he is intimately familiar with the struggles of his people, and this connection fuels his commitment to genuine, practical solutions.
In the Red Chamber, Senator Imasuen’s presence is just as commanding. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, he has demonstrated a rare commitment to justice and accountability. His proactive approach has seen the successful resolution of nine public petitions—giving ordinary Nigerians a voice and ensuring that grievances are addressed with fairness and integrity.

From education to healthcare, from legislative reforms to grassroots empowerment, Senator Neda Imasuen has emerged as a beacon of responsive and responsible representation. His actions speak louder than words, and for the people of Edo South, the results are tangible: brighter futures for students, better livelihoods for farmers, and a louder voice for all in the corridors of power.

As his tenure progresses, expectations are high—but so too is the confidence that under Senator Imasuen’s watch, Edo South will continue to witness progress that is not only promised but delivered.
