“She is too subtle for thee; and her smoothness Her very silence and her patience
Speak to the people and they pity her…”
“As you like” it – William Shakespeare
The wife of one of the nation’s active political strategists and ex Lagos State Governor (Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu) Senator Oluremi Tinubu recently clocked sixty years of age.
For the pretty daughter of an Ijebu (Ogun State) born businessman, Chief Ikusebiala, living in this part of the world as a true and dedicated child of God and attaining such an age with great and unsurpassed achievement, is not a child’s play, but suffice to say that her life as a mother and a lover of humanity, couple with her unequalled Christian ideals has bestowed on her as a woman of courage and strength.
Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu got married to the famous Tinubu family which gave her Ahmed Bola Tinubu (an American trained accounting guru) as a life partner. At the youthful age of 26, the easy going Oluremi’s marriage to this swashbuckling political leader whose consistent struggle for a free democratic society later metamorphosed into what is today known as our nascent democracy, was full of ups and downs, she has never back out inspite of the challenges her husband and fellow progressives faced in the trying times of the NADECO struggle. In her own words, I thank the Lord for the partner He gave to me, to work hand in hand, through life’s journey. My marriage has been quite fulfilling and I am now resting on the knowledge that we have more reward, for our labour has not been in vain…”
However Mrs. Tinubu’s marriage success couldn’t have been an easy ride if she didn’t have behind her, great women of substance like mama Oye Williams, Mrs. Adetoun Mustapha and late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya. These outstanding amazons in their own class were her role models.
Aside the undeniable fact that her husband, Bola Tinubu is a practical politician and a believer of the Muslim faith, her doggedness and determination to succeed in her humanitarian pursuits to uplift the less privileged from the shackles of poverty and neglect led her into building a school in the then infamous Charles Taylor’s Liberia, in the capital city of Monrovia, to ameliorate the suffering of Africa’s devastated children who are future leaders. She has also facilitated the hitherto renowned youthful programme christened as “the one day governor, with her pet project” New Era Foundation” a programme which is still waxing strong in Lagos State, through the spelling Bee Competition.
As she clocks the diamond age of 60, rather than engage Lagosians and the rest of humanity in an orgy of Ostentation, this simple and easy going political trail blazer decided to use the wonderful occasion to freely distribute the Holy Bible (the symbol of her Christian faith) to persons and also went on preaching about the goodness of God Almighty, even at the numerous challenge posed by the COVID 19 pandemic.
While celebrating her golden jubilee 10 years ago, Senator Oluremi Tinubu utilized all the numerous funds realized there, to further advance the ideals of education and well being of the youths social development through different NGOs. She also built an expansive foundation centre along Ibeju-Akodo road with incontestible recreational facilities for youths on holidays.
On her initial adventure into the political research and effective public speaker, a reformer and a fighter for women’s cause, especially in the areas of women registration, women empowerment and social security for the aged persons.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu is not a stooge among lawmakers in the National Assembly. Among the numerous bills she had earlier proposed, the bill seeking for a special status for Lagos metropolis have not seen the light of the day, but she had chaired the Senate Committee on education, employment, productivity and transportation. Her bills on social security for the elderly persons have passed the third reading stage just as she has also been active in oversight functions.
In a special Congratulating message to the God fearing lawmaker, the Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde said that Mrs. Tinubu has offered quality representation to Lagos Central Senatorial district and have also done Lagos State proud by raising fundamental issues that are relevant to its welfare and progress. “Your legislative contributions have marked you out as a humanist, a core progressive ideologue and defender of public good…” Ayinde concluded.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s enviable stewardship has made her to distinguish herself as the only Senator from that district to hold town hall meetings to render accounts of her service to those who voted her into the exalted office.
She has also not forgotten the needy as she still issue cheques to indigent students and petty traders. The second republic House of Representatives members, Prince Tajudeen Olusi said that although the senatorial district had produced many senators like the Musliu Obanikoros, Sikiru Shitta Beys, Kofor Akerele Bucknors, Tokunbo Afikuyomis and the Aderiji Adeles, but it is only Oluremi Tirubu that has organized town hall meeting to render accounts of her stewardship. The Parliament Diary Newspaper wishes the benevolent and generous nation lawmaker a prosperous and easy existence for herself and entire family.
