The Parliament Diary

In Nigerian history of civil service development over the years, while recently, Nigerian civil servants and labour force entirely applauds President Tinubu for N70,000 Minimum Wage increase, Oyo State civil servants are counting their blessings in their numbers beyond just N80, 000 minimum wage implementation high than all states in the Southwestern Nigeria.

Despite the huge promise and fulfilment of N80, 000 minimum wage for civil servants, Governor Seyi Abiodun Makinde GSSRS, has most recently graciously approved appointment of 902 (Nine Hundred and Two Officers, into mainstream Civil services of Oyo State in addition to a 130,000 thousand work force. Please, clap for his Excellency empathy for the unemployed demography in Oyo state which challenges other states across Nigeria.

This recruitment under review, is first of its kind, in the history of Oyo State and covers about sixty cadres across ministries, departments and agencies in the state. This milestone, is inclusive of Education Officers for thirty five teaching subjects areas in schools under ministry of education, science and technology.

His Excellency, further broke record to show civil servants friendliness and empathy for diligent civil servants by appointing 48 Permanent Secretaries whose appointment was long overdue over the years before Governor Seyi Abiodun Makinde GSSRS became Governor of Oyo State in 2019 and relected in 2023 by the good people of Oyo State. What a well deserved, reward for diligent civil servants.

His Excellency’s, full implementation of 80,000 minimum wage as promised to Oyo State civil servants and lots more is evidential in Oyo State.

Once again, a record breaking history unfolded on Friday 24th, January, 2025 wherein, Oyo State Government dropped a total sum of ₦12 billion in the pockets of the state government workers, signifying the largest tranche of monthly salaries and wages in Southwest Nigeria.

Though Lagos State pays ₦85,000 minimum wage but has less workforce than Oyo which boasts of over 130,000 workers.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the ₦12 billion paid yesterday is a result of promise kept by Governor Seyi Makinde on the ₦80,000 minimum wage for the State workers from January 1, 2025.

One of the implications of the new wage is that workers on Grade levels one to six now enjoy a minimum of ₦50,000 increment while the salaries of those on Grade level 17 shoot up by over ₦180,000.

In this same month of January, Pensioners are not left behind in the comprehensive welfare.

A minimum pension of ₦25,000 and a 33% pension increment for over 40,000 retirees have been approved with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner revealed that the State Government has abolished the payment of ₦4,000 for retirement forms to further ease financial pressure on those planning to retire.

To this end almost ₦20 million will go back to the pockets of about 4,500 workers who will retire soon.

This is why, the clamour from the nooks and crannies of Nigeria, for His Excellency, Governor Seyi Abiodun Makinde GSSRS, to be considered as a viable 2027 PDP Presidential candidate to bring further his workers welfarism style of government at the Federal Level is a clarion call.

If elected President of Nigeria as timely as Governor Seyi deserves supports from all well meaning Nigerians, his style of leadership will curtail Jakpa Syndrome in Civil and Public Service, in Nigeria from 2027 and beyond under His Excellency, Governor Seyi Abiodun Makinde GSSRS presidency without prejudices.
