Given short supply of corp members to Cross River state occasioned by poor infrastructures at the Obubra NYSC Orientation Camp, the state House of Assembly in her plenary session in Calabar appealed to state governor, His Excellency, Sen. Bassey Otu to give the orientation camp a facelift in line with his administration people’s first mantra.
In a motion sponsored by Hon. Martins Achadu representing Yala 2 state constituency, he named inadequate water supply, broken fences, poor power supply, lack of beds and other basic amenities as Contributory factors for the low patronage of NYSC in Cross River state as against other states of the federation.
The lawmaker prayed state government to amongst others mandate the state ministry of Works to immediately rebuild the collapse fence at the orientation camp to douse fears of insecurity in the area. Other prayers are that the Cross River state government should as a matter of public importance commence renovation of the Obubra NYSC Orientation Camp to give it a new status.
Hon. Achadu added that state government should provide a well treated water plant to ameliorate sufferings of the Corp members. In his words
“NYSC is an essential commodity given the state of our educational system.
“Very few corp members are sent to my place now.
This is because, not much was sent to the state as a result of our poor facilities. We need their services as much as they need our support.
Every other state in Nigeria gives strong support to NYSC scheme.
NYSC in turn patronizes these states with much of her members.
We cannot do otherwise.
“It is very essential that Cross River state government gives attention to Obubra NYSC Orientation Camp.” He said.
The motion seconded by Hon. Stanley Nsemo followed the logic of revamping the orientation camp in Obubra with a view to forster national unity and giving the youths a lease of hope.
Other parliamentarians who contributed to the motion charged the House Committee on Environment on oversight function to determine the extend of negligence facing the orientation camp.
Earlier, Assembly Speaker, RT. Hon. Elvert Ayambem said the call for renovation of Obubra NYSC Orientation Camp is timely while promising to partner Executive organ on adequate steps that will address abnormality confronting the citadel of youth corp development in the state.
