The Benin Kingdom’s legendary history is steeped in mystique and power. At the heart of it all is the Oba, the sacred king, whose words are considered divine. In the context of Dr. Obaseki narratives to his audience, certain of his spoken words can be considered blasphemous by the Oba guardsmen because they’re believed to hold the power to either uplift or destroy. Thus, he, Dr. Obaseki, was escorted by the guardsmen to the Oba’s palace for reverence and guidance.
The Oba’s authority is rooted in tradition and spirituality. His words are thought to carry weight, influencing the kingdom’s prosperity and stability. Uttering words that contradict or disrespect the Oba’s divine status can be seen as challenging his authority, potentially disrupting the balance of power and harmony in the kingdom.
Some examples of blasphemous words might include:
-Disrespecting the Oba’s Ancestors: The Benin people believe their Obas are descendants of gods, so speaking ill of their ancestors is a serious offense.
-Questioning the Oba’s Divine Right: Challenging the Oba’s authority or questioning his connection to the divine can be seen as blasphemy.
-Using Forbidden Names or Words: Certain words or names might be considered sacred or taboo, and uttering them could be seen as invoking divine wrath.
