The Parliament Diary

Reports indicating that the Edo State Government has earmarked the sum of N70 billion for agriculture in the 2025 budget could signal a brighter future for farmers and strengthen food security, it was learnt.

In a statement, Mr. John Mayaki, an entrepreneurship, leadership, and sustainability expert trained at Oxford and Cambridge universities, described it as the best news in recent times. He said, “it has the capacity for tackling food shortage, availability, and sustainability”.

Mayaki, who is also a farmer, said:
“This appears to be the single largest amount ever budgeted by the Edo State Government for agriculture and sustainable food production.

“It is disheartening when you hear that your state is challenging the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with an act of the House of Assembly, especially when the Supreme Court has already delivered a final verdict on the status of local government councils, a position championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“But this news gladdens my heart; it’s the best so far. We need to get everyone on the farm, engage youths productively, and reduce dependence on politics and undue pressure on our governance system.

“Governor Monday Okpebholo would do well to focus on initiatives that directly improve the welfare of the masses rather than tarnishing his image by witch-hunting council chairmen. Encouraging farming and ensuring food for everyone will create a better legacy for him than attempting constitutional confrontations via the House of Assembly.

“Besides, the Governor should ensure that this budget is not merely symbolic or misappropriated. He must implement policies to support existing farmers while providing better incentives to attract new ones into agriculture.

“This initiative should focus on real farming, not on land grabbing or enabling portfolio farmers to hijack tractors and resources for personal gain. Real farmers must be empowered with modern tools, resources, and access to essential support and training, which will create jobs and boost incomes in rural communities.

“If Governor Okpebholo strengthens food security and economic stability in Edo State, he will have successfully addressed the key concerns of our people, which is the essence of governance.

“I believe that with this agriculture – focused budget, small – scale farmers will thrive, and their success stories will demonstrate what is possible when innovation meets dedication. I am confident in agriculture’s transformative power and proud to support any government that prioritises food security and agricultural development.”
