Former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has called for urgent action to dismantle gender inequality and empower women in Nigeria, as the world marks International Women’s Day 2025.
In a statement titled “Accelerate Action – Elevate Women, Transform Nigeria,” Anyim celebrated the strength, resilience, and contributions of women, emphasizing that they are the “heartbeat of our homes, the backbone of our economy, and the architects of our future.”
However, he stressed that mere recognition of women’s contributions is not enough, urging leaders and society to take concrete steps to eliminate the barriers holding women back.
“This year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ is a call for bold and immediate change. It is not enough to acknowledge gender inequality; we must dismantle it. It is not enough to admire women’s achievements; we must create more opportunities. It is not enough to condemn gender-based violence; we must eradicate it,” he declared.
The former lawmaker decried the exclusion of women from leadership, business, and decision-making roles, calling for an end to such systemic discrimination. He pledged to champion policies that protect women from violence, support female entrepreneurs, expand access to education for girls, and promote inclusive workplaces.
Beyond legislation, Anyim emphasized the need for cultural and societal change, urging men to play an active role in promoting gender equality.
“Every father must raise his daughter to believe she is limitless. Every brother must stand as a defender of his sister’s rights. Every husband must uplift his wife as an equal partner. When we lift women, we lift families. When we empower women, we empower nations,” he asserted.
Addressing women directly, he encouraged them to continue striving for excellence and breaking barriers.
“To every woman reading this: You are unstoppable. You are irreplaceable. You are the future. Today, we celebrate you, but beyond today, we fight for you. The time for hesitation is over. The time for action is now,” he declared.
Senator Anyim concluded by urging all stakeholders—government, private sector, and individuals—to accelerate efforts toward achieving true gender equality in Nigeria.
