The Parliament Diary

In a bid to alleviate the suffering of travelers and promote economic growth, the House of Representatives has urged national security agencies to reduce the number of excessive security checkpoints on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.

The motion, which was moved on the floor of the House by Representative Amobi Ogah from Abia State highlighted the alarming number of security checkpoints on the 105-kilometer stretch of road. With approximately 28 checkpoints, travelers are forced to stop every 3.7 kilometers, resulting in constant harassment, delays, and extortions.

The lawmaker criticized the numerous checkpoints which he says is a violation of citizens’ constitutional rights to free movement.

Furthermore, he says the checkpoints have become a tool for harassment, with commercial drivers often forced to pay bribes to avoid delays or harassment.
