Holy trips, Empty lives : The Scandal of Christian/Muslim Sponsored Pilgrimage
……..Pilgrimage or Public Policy Failure?
Otiti aka truthsayer
Muslims/Christians – The government is known for spending millions of naira from taxpayers’ money to sponsor pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Mecca. Christians are flown to Israel, Muslims to Saudi Arabia. We call it generosity. Some even call it holiness.
But a deeper question must be asked: when these pilgrims return, what has truly changed?
They come back with the same empty pockets, the same hunger, the same unemployment, the same broken streets and begging bowls, only now with photographs and souvenirs.

Their location changed for a few days, but their lives did not.
Prayer did not build a school. Faith did not create jobs. Holy stones did not repair broken hospitals or fix collapsed roads. If divine answers were guaranteed by geography, why does poverty still patiently wait for them at home?
The only clear beneficiaries are the airlines, hotels, visa offices, tour operators, and foreign economies of Jerusalem and Mecca. Meanwhile, the sponsoring communities remain trapped in the same cycle of hardship.
This is not compassion; it is misdirected charity. It is exporting poverty instead of solving it. It is feeding belief while ignoring reality.
Real salvation is education.
Real miracles are opportunities.
Real worship is lifting people out of suffering, not flying them across the world to pray and returning them unchanged.
