Chief Joshua Dazzy Kemeagbeye, the His Royal Highness of Feremo-Ama Community in Ekeremor LGA, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, is calling on Beam Energy Nigeria to take immediate action to address the damages they’ve caused to their farm land. The company’s gas turbine work in Tamogbene, Norgbene, and Amabolou communities has resulted in the destruction of their economic trees, which have been a vital source of livelihood for the community since 1979.
These economic trees, specifically bush mango trees ( Irvingia gabonensis), produced one billion seeds annually and were a crucial part of the community’s survival. However, Beam Energy Nigeria’s actions have not only destroyed these trees but also covered their fishing creeks, making it impossible for them to fish and feed their families. Furthermore, the company’s workers’ boats have caused significant damage to the community’s waterside, destroying canoes and putting children’s lives at risk as they defecate in the water due to the lack of toilet facilities.
The community is demanding that Beam Energy Nigeria takes responsibility for their actions and provides adequate compensation for the damages caused. Chief Kemeagbeye emphasized that the company must “do the needful” or face the consequences of not being allowed to continue their gas turbine work in the community. He also drew attention to the fact that Shell, another energy company, had successfully carried out similar work in Tuomo community, Delta State, years ago without destroying the economic trees.
The Feremo-Ama Community is seeking justice and fair treatment from Beam Energy Nigeria. They expect the company to respect their environment, traditions, and way of life. The community’s leadership, under Chief Kemeagbeye, will not hesitate to take further action if their demands are not met.
