EDSG Walk Against Cancer: Raising Awareness for Prevention, Early Detection

In a concerted effort to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Anani, today joined a Walk Against Cancer in Benin City. The campaign aimed to educate Edo residents on the reality of cancer, emphasizing that early detection can save lives and increase the chances of recovery.

The awareness walk, which commenced at Airport Road, Akenzuwa Junction, and ended at the Vegetable Market, witnessed an overwhelming turnout. A massive crowd filled the streets, chanting slogans such as “War against cancer,” and “Cancer is not a death sentence—early detection saves lives!” Participants, brimming with enthusiasm, danced to melodious tunes while advocating for regular health check-ups.

Speaking during the event, Mrs. Anani emphasized the importance of routine medical screenings. “Gone are the days when a cancer diagnosis meant fear and hopelessness. Today, cancer is preventable and, in many cases, curable. This walk is a call to action for people to go for regular check-ups,” she stated.

She urged women to practice self-examination, particularly for breast and cervical cancer, noting that the Edo State Government recently sponsored free cervical cancer screenings. “We are here to tell our people that the government cares. His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has prioritized healthcare in this administration, ensuring that people have access to life-saving interventions. Cancer is curable and preventable—healthy lifestyles, regular exercise, and a strong immune system are key,” she added.

The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, highlighted the significance of the campaign in enlightening the public about cancer. “If you notice any unusual changes in your body, visit the nearest hospital for a check-up. Cultivate healthy eating habits—high-fiber foods, less junk—and engage in regular exercise. Awareness and early intervention can make all the difference,” he advised.

Convener of the Walk Against Cancer and Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, Sally Suleman, encouraged individuals to be proactive about their health. “Women should know their bodies. If you notice any irregularities, seek medical attention immediately. Regular check-ups can save lives,” she stated.

Also speaking, Mrs. Irenose Ihensekhien, Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, reiterated that early detection is key and urged women to cultivate the habit of routine medical check-ups.
