Let’s be straightforward: Nigeria needs a wake-up call.

The Parliament Diary’s 6th Lecture Series and Award Ceremony, themed “Steering the Ship: Building a Resilient Nigeria,” isn about ceremony. It’s about survival.

Too many of us have watched Nigeria’s leaders drift while the country’s problems pile up. Unemployment. Energy shortages. Governance gaps. Security threats. The list grows longer while responses grow shorter.

Today, the National Assembly Complex in Abuja becomes the gathering point for leaders who must finally ask themselves: What are we actually doing to fix this?

The Awards Aren’t Just Awards

Sure, we’re celebrating Senator Barau Jibrin Ibrahim, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Minister Nyesom Wike. They’ve delivered. They’ve shown what possible looks like.

But the real point isn the medals or the plaques. The point is showing other leaders what they could be doing instead of just talking.

Limited leadership. Empty promises. “We’ll get there eventually.”

Well, “eventually” is costing Nigeria millions of lives and opportunities every day.

In other words: how to actually fix Nigeria’s broken systems.

The Call Is Clear

Leaders in the wheelhouse of power—legislators crafting laws, executives implementing policies, traditional rulers guiding communities, professionals driving innovation—must converge to build institutions that can weather storms.

That’s what “Steering the Ship” means. It’s not a metaphor. It’s a strategic imperative.

The Bottom Line

Nigeria can’t wait another decade for “eventually.”
