Enugu Traditional Ruler Backs Mbah’s Drug Fight, Urges Collective Action

ENUGU, The traditional ruler of Ovuorie in Nkanu East Local Government Area, HRM Igwe Denis Okafor Ezeaniokosisi, has commended Governor Peter Mbah for inaugurating the Enugu State Drug Control Committee, describing it as “an important and timely initiative” to tackle the rising challenge of illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Igwe Ezeaniokosisi, also known as Ezeaniokosisi of Ovuorie, said the move demonstrates the governor’s commitment to protecting the lives, future, and wellbeing of residents of the state.

“The inauguration of this committee shows that government is taking the fight against drug abuse seriously,” the monarch said. “This is not merely a law-enforcement responsibility. It is a collective battle that requires government, traditional institutions, religious bodies, parents, schools, communities, security agencies and civil society organisations to work together.”

The royal father expressed concern over the impact of drug abuse on youths, noting that substance abuse has contributed to youth vulnerability, criminal behaviour, violence, family breakdown, poor academic performance, mental and social problems.

“Young people represent the future of our communities. Allowing them to become trapped in substance abuse means putting the future of our society at risk,” he stated.

Igwe Ezeaniokosisi urged the newly inaugurated committee to adopt a comprehensive approach that combines prevention, public enlightenment, effective enforcement, rehabilitation, and reintegration of persons struggling with substance abuse.

He added that traditional rulers, as custodians of culture and community values, have a significant role to play in educating their people and ensuring that communities do not become safe havens for drug distribution.

The monarch also appealed to parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the welfare and associations of their children and wards, stressing that early intervention and open communication can make a difference.

“Those who profit from the destruction of our youths by trafficking and distributing illicit substances must face the full force of the law, while persons affected by addiction should receive appropriate support and rehabilitation,” he said.

On behalf of the people of Ovuorie and the traditional institution, Igwe Ezeaniokosisi urged the committee to remain focused, transparent, and community-oriented in discharging its responsibilities.

“A drug-free society is a safer society, a healthier society and a society with a brighter future,” he concluded. “May God continue to grant His Excellency the wisdom, courage and strength to implement programmes that will protect our people and advance the development of Enugu State.”

The Enugu State Drug Control Committee was recently inaugurated by Gov. Mbah as part of efforts to reduce drug abuse and trafficking across the state.
