Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi Represents Speaker at Public Hearing on the Nigeria Police Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024

The House of Representatives on Monday, 17th November 2025, held a Public Hearing on the Nigeria Police Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 with the session formally declared open on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, Member representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency.

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker, Hon. Ezechi stated that the Bill seeks to deepen justice, fairness, and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, in line with the House’s commitment to strengthening national security institutions.

A key highlight of the proposed amendment is the mandate for a minimum of fifteen percent (15%) female recruitment quota in the Nigeria Police Force. The Speaker’s remarks stressed that increased women participation enhances accountability, reduces excessive use of force, improves handling of gender-based cases, and strengthens public trust.

The amendment also proposes the establishment of a Gender-Responsive Compliance Unit to monitor recruitment, training, deployment, discipline, and promotion, ensuring effective implementation of gender policies. The Speaker emphasized that the Bill aligns with constitutional provisions and Nigeria’s international commitments, including CEDAW and SDG 5.

Hon. Ezechi further noted that the public hearing provides an opportunity for constructive engagement among stakeholders—including the Legislature, Executive, Police hierarchy, civil society, and advocacy groups—to ensure that the final legislation delivers sustainable reforms.

The Speaker commended the sponsor of the Bill, the Committee on Police Affairs, and all stakeholders advocating for gender inclusion and institutional strengthening across national agencies.
