By Henshaw NYONGCivil servants in the Executive cadres and Allied grades in Akwa Ibom State have commended Governor Umo Eno and the Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Elsie Peters for the smooth and orderly conduct of the recently concluded Compulsory Examination, describing the exercise as well coordinated and in line with best practices in public service administration.The examination was held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Civil Service Training Centre, Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Highway, following a preparatory seminar organised for candidates on December 29, 2025, at the same venue.Our correspondent, who monitored the exercise, observed a calm and organised atmosphere throughout the day, with candidates from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies arriving early, undergoing accreditation without hitches and sitting for the examination as scheduled.Several participants, while engaging in discussions in small groups before and after the examination, described the process as transparent, top-notch and well planned, noting that the conduct of the exercise reflected the administration’s emphasis on professionalism and capacity building within the civil service.Many of the officers specifically praised Governor Eno, saying the examination was in line with his ARISE Agenda, particularly its focus on strengthening the civil service as the backbone of effective governance.The Head of Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, was also widely applauded by participants for what they described as an impressive organisational outing, especially coming barely weeks after her appointment and swearing in in November 2025. They noted that the timely planning and execution of the examination underscored her resolve to deepen efficiency, discipline and competence in the service.The Department of Establishments, including the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Esther Inyang, was also eulogised for what participants described as effective coordination, particularly in the areas of logistics, accreditation and overall supervision of the process, in line with best practices.Beyond the examination, some officers used the occasion to thank Governor Eno for the broader pro-worker initiative of his administration, particularly the allocation of over 150 housing units to junior civil servants, the implementation of the new minimum wage, prompt payment of salaries, the 13th-month salary known as Eno-Mber, settlement of pension payments and gratuity backlogs as well as the recent recruitment of 4,000 workers into the state civil service.Meanwhile, findings by this reporter revealed that within three weeks of assuming office, Mrs Peters approved and released the 2024 and 2025 promotion for secondary school teachers, a development described by beneficiaries as unprecedented in recent years.Investigations showed that teachers previously waited up to three years to receive promotion letters after qualifying examinations, a delay that often dampened morale across the service.It was further gathered that upon resumption, the Head of Civil Service met three major civil service examinations inherited from 2024 and 2025 without clear timelines for execution. These included the CONPRO Examination, the Executive Class Examination and the APOCE Examination.Sources confirmed that Mrs Peters has since facilitated and ensured the conduct of all three examinations, with the APOCE seminar held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and the examination scheduled to take place over the weekend.Insiders attributed these developments to what they described as a problem-solving approach and decisive administrative style, especially on matters affecting career progression and morale of civil servants.They noted that Mrs Peters has consistently maintained that support for the Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda must translate into concrete action, rather than excuses or ceremonial compliance.
