Hon. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, member of the House of Representatives for Oshodi‑Isolo Constituency II, has underscored the unifying power of sport during this year’s Olympic Day celebration at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
As a special guest, he joined athletes, fitness enthusiasts and community members in a day packed with demonstration sports, recreational activities, jogging and walking—each designed to champion Olympic values, promote inclusivity and encourage nationwide participation in healthy lifestyles.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Onuakalusi highlighted the broader role of sports in youth development and community cohesion. “Today’s celebration is a testament to the power of sports to unite and inspire our communities,” he said. “I remain committed to backing initiatives that not only uplift my constituents in Oshodi‑Isolo II but also foster opportunities for our young people to thrive.”
Organized by the Nigerian Olympic Committee under President Habu Gumel, the Lagos event formed part of a series of nationwide flag‑off ceremonies, with various state governments, sports councils and commissions lending their support.
By bringing together stakeholders from government, education and civil society, the celebration aimed to reinforce the importance of fitness, fair play and equal access to sporting activities for all Nigerians.
Hon. Onuakalusi’s presence at Olympic Day also reflects his ongoing legislative priorities—education, empowerment, employment, street‑lighting and clean‑water access—by recognizing sport as a vital component of holistic community development. His advocacy sends a clear message: investing in grassroots sports and youth engagement programs is essential to building healthier, more connected communities.
