… Eye’s return to CAF/WCL

Edo Queens Football Club of Benin secured their second consecutive win by beating Heartland Queens of Owerri 2-1 at the Dan Anyiam yesterday.

Edo Queen’s goal machine Emem Essien, netted in the first goal in 40th minute of action, just five minutes before the end of first quarter with a right- footed shot into the bottom left – hand corner of the goal post.

The Obi Ogbala, ladies from Owerri came into the game with fear and anxiety, as they kept on receiving pressure from the Benin-City based ladies.

As the second half wore on, Heartland Queens head coach Obi Ogbala, tried to get his players back into the game with continuous shouting and dishing out instructions from the touch line. This move no doubt yielded result as the Owerri girls came back smoking. And barely few minutes into second half, Mathew Monica, brought life back to Dan Anyiam Stadium, by scoring a penalty in 48th minute for the Hope Uzodima ladies, bringing the score line to 1-1

The host side made series of changes to add bite to the game fighting hard to have a draw but the Ancient City ladies attacking force were just to much for the Owerri girls to contend with. The home side could hardly have hoped for a better performance than this. But the Monday Okpebholo, Queens were out to make a statement in the game.

As the pressure from the visiting side kept coming, the home team were completely overrun by a resurgent force from Emem Essien, Esther Moses, Osigwu Goodness and Esther Inyange. Edo Queens finally got their winning goal in 70th minute when Goodness Osigwu, sail pass two Heartland defenders who were expecting the centre refereer to blow for an offside positional.play.That goal left the Owerri girls in misery, as Edo Queens camp went up in celebration.

This defeat have left the Owerri team in winless situation, as they hope to redeem their image in their next home game on the 29th.

With This 2-1 victory in Owerri, the NWFL defending champions have continued their impressive and unbeaten run in the premiership. They will return to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City next Wednesday where they hope to consolidate on the form as they host the tactically led -Mathew Wemimo-Remo Stars Ladies of Ikenne.

As defending champions, Edo Queens fans in Benin will expect nothing less than a win on Wednesday clash of supremacy between the iron lady Mathew Wemimo and Moses Aduku of Edo Queens.

Having experienced the glamour and financial benefits attached to CAF Women’s Champions League, Edo Queens are already eyeing second return to the continental showpiece hence the slogan ‘ Every Game is a Battle’

For the Ancient City based ladies, they are back to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City to consolidate on their current form, and ensure they do the State proud as file out on Wednesday 29th, January 2025 against Remo Stars Ladies in a win or burst clash.
