NCYP Honours Ndume With Award of Excellence

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has honoured Ali Ndume with an Award of Excellence in Peacebuilding, Unity, and Truthful Advocacy, in recognition of his more than 23 years of service in Nigeria’s National Assembly.

During the presentation, NCYP national chairman Isaac Abrak described the award as a tribute to Ndume’s “courage in speaking truth to power and defending the interests of ordinary Nigerians.”

Senator Ndume, who has served both in the House of Representatives and as a senator, was commended for his consistency and steadfastness in addressing issues affecting his constituency and the nation at large.

Abrak said the honour represents both recognition and endorsement of the lawmaker’s unwavering commitment to speaking truth to power, particularly in defence of the masses, often referred to as the Talakawa.

He cited several instances where Ndume demonstrated this courage, including his concerns during the removal of the fuel subsidy. While acknowledging the policy as a necessary reform, the senator had warned of its harsh consequences for ordinary Nigerians, especially those on low incomes.

Ndume was also noted for questioning whether government palliatives were reaching the intended beneficiaries and for consistently calling for transparency and accountability in their distribution.

The NCYP chairman further highlighted the senator’s vocal stance on issues such as rising government borrowing and aspects of ongoing tax reforms, noting that he has continued to scrutinise policies to safeguard the interests of the commoner.

“This award is not only a recognition but also a statement that we stand with you and urge you not to relent. Your courage reflects the true calling of effective representative and visionary leadership—standing for truth and justice at all times,” Abrak said.

In his acceptance speech, Ndume expressed appreciation to the organisation and reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to truth and integrity.

He stressed that speaking truth to power should not be misconstrued as disrespect for authority, noting that he maintains a cordial relationship with Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He added that, as a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he remains committed to the progress of both the party and the nation, emphasising that constructive criticism of government policies is part of his legislative responsibility.

Ndume also stressed the need for unity, stating that Christianity and Islam should serve as forces for national cohesion rather than division.

He cautioned against using religion as a political tool to manipulate citizens.

On insecurity, the senator noted that violence in the country affects both Christians and Muslims, calling for collective action and unity across religious lines to address the challenge.

He further urged NCYP to remain steadfast in upholding truth regardless of the consequences, expressing confidence that righteousness ultimately prevails.

Ndume also encouraged the group to promote interreligious harmony by collaborating with Muslim organisations to advance shared political and developmental goals.

Additionally, he called on NCYP to intensify efforts toward addressing the marginalisation of Christian youths in governance, urging greater participation and representation in public offices.
