Mitigating Campus Marriage in Tertiary Institutions

Campus marriage is a situation where two students in a tertiary institution live and behave like a married couple — showing emotional attachment, companionship, and shared responsibilities — even though they are not legally married. It is common in universities, polytechnics, and colleges across Nigeria.

While it may provide temporary comfort, campus marriage often threatens the main purpose of education. The emotional demands, financial strain, and time spent managing “home” issues distract students from lectures, assignments, and personal growth. Many experience poor grades, stress, and in worse cases, unplanned pregnancies or dropouts.

The Governing Council of the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has congratulated distinguished recipients of the maiden ALDRAP “Blue Silk” Honour, describing the award as a landmark recognition of excellence in non-litigation legal practice in Nigeria.

The prestigious investiture, held on 23rd April 2026 in Abuja, celebrated legal professionals who have made outstanding contributions to legislative drafting, regulatory advisory, public policy formulation, and legal scholarship — fields often overshadowed by courtroom advocacy.

In a congratulatory message e-signed by its President, the NLS said the Blue Silk Honour “aligns strongly with our core aim of promoting and advancing excellence beyond litigation.”

“Your elevation to this esteemed rank is a clear testament to your outstanding contributions to sound legislative frameworks, institutional governance, and policy innovation in Nigeria,” the statement read. “It underscores the vital role of non-litigation practitioners in shaping national development and strengthening democratic institutions.”

NOTABLE HONOUREES
The NLS specifically celebrated Senibo Elisha Jaja, father of Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, PhD, SCN; Adebayo Akinade of the University of Lagos; and other distinguished professionals whose work has shaped laws and policies at state and federal levels.

ALDRAP COMMENDED FOR VISIONARY INITIATIVE
The Society praised the Association of Legislative Drafters and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) for conceptualising the Blue Silk Honour, calling it a “visionary and forward-looking initiative that broadens professional recognition within the legal community.”

Special commendation was given to Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, PhD, SCN, whose pioneering leadership was described as instrumental in actualising the honour. “His efforts have significantly advanced the recognition of excellence within non-litigation legal practice,” NLS stated.

DIGNITARIES GRACE LANDMARK EVENT
The investiture drew high-profile attendees, including representatives of the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife.

Goodwill messages were also extended to the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) for its continued mentorship and commitment to professional distinction within the Bar.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR LEGAL PRACTICE
The NLS noted that the Blue Silk Honour reinforces its mission to “elevate professional standards, promote ethical practice, and enhance the impact of non-litigation lawyers in Nigeria.”

“This recognition will further inspire recipients to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and service,” the Society added, thanking members of the press for projecting the milestone to the wider public.

The Nigerian Law Society reaffirmed its commitment to fostering capacity building and institutional collaboration as non-litigation practice gains national prominence.
