Edo Assembly Invites BEDC Over Persistent Power Outages

The Edo State House of Assembly has invited the management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to appear before the House on March 9, 2026, over persistent and unreliable power supply across the state.

The directive was issued by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, during Wednesday’s plenary, citing deep concern over the worsening electricity situation.

He described the state of power supply as disheartening and unacceptable, given the hardships faced by residents and businesses.

Rt. Hon. Agbebaku noted that several lawmakers had facilitated the installation of transformers in their constituencies to improve electricity access.

However, BEDC is reported to have insisted on payment before energizing the newly installed transformers, further aggravating the challenges confronting communities.

The House resolved to seek detailed explanations from BEDC management regarding the current power supply issues and the conditions for energising community-provided transformers. Lawmakers also expressed their commitment to exploring appropriate legislative and oversight measures to ensure improved service delivery and relief for residents.

Plenary was adjourned to Monday, March 9, 2026, pending the company’s appearance.
