From Viral to Viable: APPMEN’s Bold Move to Rescue Nigeria’s Billion-Naira Creator Economy

Behind every viral skit, every trending TikTok dance and every million-view Facebook reel in Nigeria is a silent pain that few talk about. An account flagged without reason. Earnings withheld for six months. A YouTube channel demonetized without explanation. For millions of Nigerian content creators, comedians, skit makers, bloggers and influencers, fame does not always translate to fortune.

It is this painful reality that the Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishments of Nigeria (APPMEN) confronted head-on on Thursday, 24th September, 2026, at the AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju Hall in Maitama, Abuja.

Themed VOICE, VISION, PURPOSE, the Aso APPMEN / Content Creators 1-Day Conference and Money Recovery Clinic was more than a conference. As National Coordinator, Chief Precious Enebuse put it:

“This is not a talk shop. It is a clinic.”

For the first time, creators queued not just to network, but to be diagnosed.

The diagnosis is troubling. Nigeria’s creator economy is worth billions in traffic and engagement. Nigerian creators dominate Africa’s digital space. Yet, they remain at the mercy of opaque algorithms and foreign support desks that do not understand Nigerian context. APPMEN’s answer is radical and practical: The Money Recovery Clinic powered by Artificial Intelligence.

In partnership with 7Ai & Farm Alert Limited led by Dr. Kayode John Femi, the clinic will introduce AI-powered tools to track earnings, flag discrepancies, and guide creators on compliance. It is a shift from complaining to recovering.

But APPMEN is thinking beyond money. If journalism has been reduced to hustle, how do you return it to profession? The answer lies in its second project: The APPMEN Institute for Communication and Media Studies affiliated to the University of Maiduguri. It will be the first Institute established by private media proprietors affiliated to a Federal University in Nigeria. Registration started right at the hall.

To give the vision fathers and guides, APPMEN invested a heavyweight Council of Patrons led by former Cross River Governor Senator Liyel Imoke, with traditional rulers like HRH Barr. Joel Sabo Aninge, the Odyong Nyankpa II of Panda, Nasarawa, as Grand Patron, and HRH Alh. Baba Umar Faruq II, Emir of Katagum, as National Patron. The Advisory Council is chaired by Dr. Otive Igbuzor.

In his acceptance speech, the Grand Patron struck a chord that resonated with every media proprietor in the hall:

“Running a private media establishment in Nigeria requires an unmatched level of resilience, vision and uncommon sacrifice… While AI can analyze data in seconds, it can never replace human empathy, ethical judgment and above all the investigative courage that define true journalism.”

It is a reminder that in the rush to embrace digital tools, APPMEN does not want to lose its journalistic soul.

Perhaps the most telling moment was the appeal for a home. In a city of power and opulence, APPMEN, the body shielding millions of private media voices, operates without a befitting National Secretariat. Chief Enebuse’s appeal was raw and direct:

“We appeal for the donation or sponsorship of a 5-Bedroom Duplex in Abuja… Whoever gives us a home today has built a legacy in Nigeria’s media history.”

He also asked for a utility van to reach creators in 36 states, sponsorship for poor but gifted youths, and a take-off grant for the APPMEN Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society, a lifeline to stop the cycle of poverty among private media proprietors and digital creators through soft loans, equipment financing and health support.

As 25 Nigerians were unveiled as THE NIGERIA WE WANT Ambassadors, the message was clear: you cannot build the media of your dream without building the Nigeria of your dream.

For APPMEN, the journey from Voice to Vision has started. The next step is Purpose.
